SCENE 2: The Castle

(Curtain lifts and lights up on the interior of the castle, which looks far better than at the end of the first act. BEAST is trying to fix the door he slammed at the end of the first act, which was hanging off the hinge. DIANA and KNIGHTLY are under him, making sure he doesn’t fall and hurt himself. The GNOMES are handing him tools.)

DIANA: Master, should you really be doing that? You have no head for this kind of thing. It is Rubi’s duty now at any rate.

KNIGHTLY: That’s rather an uncivilized view, Diana.

DIANA: Because she’s a girl or because you’re living in the medieval era?

BEAST: (Straining) I just…want to…make it nice…for her. Like you said.

DIANA: I never said anything of the sort.

GOOSEY: He means me.

DIANA: Oh. What did you tell him?

BEAST: That being nice to someone is nicer than not being nice.

WIT: Eh?

GOOSEY: What I actually suggested was that the Master make Rubi a meal some night because, as a grand philosopher once said “The Sauce of Service is Sweeter than the Sprinkling Salt-Shaker of Self-Servitude.”

WIT: You made that up.

GOOSEY: (Convinced she’s right) No I didn’t. It’s a thing.

JESTER: A thing you made up.

WINDY: I think it’s admirable that the Master is making an effort for Rubi.

DIANA: Why should he, though?

BEAST: (Frustrated that he can’t get the door to set) I want her to stay, curse the blazes! I want her to be happy, and like it here, and like me, and want to stay. (The door sets and he falls over with excitement!) Aha!! You see—she’ll like that! Won’t she? (CASTLE shrugs.) Surely this will show her how I feel.
